Insiders Tour to Poland Led by Rabbi Haim Beliak, July 2 – 14, 2015
Join Rabbi Beliak, Executive Director of Friends of Jewish Renewal in Poland (Beit Polska), for a fascinating tour that will focus on the the diversity of view perspectives that made Polish Jewish life the source of modern Jewish life—from Jewish socialism, to Yiddish culture, branches of Zionism, and various Hassidic communities. We will remind people that the Progressive movements (today Reform and Conservative Judaism) started in the Polish lands beginning in 1803. We will note Jewish involvement in film, literature, and the arts from Artur Rubenstein to Julian Tuwim. We will visit in memorial events (near Bialystok) and sites such as Auschwitz.
In order to appreciate The Hurbin (Holocaust) we must have a sense of what was Polish Jewry. We begin an optional series of internet sessions to introduce aspects of Polish Jewish history/problematics with films, discussion and suggested readings and a discussion forum starting January 15, 2014. There will be an adjustment to the itinerary to accommodate certain changes especially the incredible new museum, The Museum of the History of Polish Jews. The option of additional venues before and after the trip exist.
